Weekly Music Spotlight: The Journey of Sovereign Entertainment and The Parlotones
Welcome to this week’s music journey where we dive into the fascinating origins of Sovereign Entertainment and the legendary South African band, The Parlotones. It’s a story of unexpected beginnings, dedication, and a shared love for music.
It’s hard to believe now, but the founder of Sovereign Entertainment didn’t come from a music background. With a solid foundation in information technology, he was first an internet entrepreneur running a successful online recruitment platform, pnet.co.za. But, in true entrepreneurial spirit, he couldn’t resist exploring the world of music.
Sovereign Entertainment was born out of sheer passion and an eagerness to learn, despite knowing nothing about the inner workings of the music industry. This fresh perspective turned out to be the perfect ingredient for success. It wasn’t long before Raphael crossed paths with some talented musicians who would go on to change the South African music scene forever.
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
When people think of a band’s rise to fame, they picture the screaming fans, sold-out shows, and platinum records. What they don’t see is the chaos behind the curtain—the sleepless nights, the near-breakups, the desperate hustles, and the make-or-break decisions that happen long before the first encore.
I was there for it all.
This column is the untold story of what it really takes to turn an unknown band into a platinum-selling act. As their manager, I fought battles in boardrooms and backstages, negotiated impossible deals, dealt with egos, breakdowns, and industry sharks—all while trying to keep the dream alive.
If you think rock ‘n’ roll is just about the music, think again. In the real world of band management, sweat, strategy, and more than a little madness pave the road to success.
“The Music Business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.”
